Finally its finished, yay! I am so happy with the end result! It has actually turned out better than i expected. I think I have successfully re-invented the one piece swimsuit in a modern and unique design.
I believe my swimsuit design successfully reflects the brave and bold life of Annette Kellerman, while still having a modern and unique edge. The design flys to new heights and sets new trends for the future, which is what Kellerman was all about.
Annette Kellerman was a woman who liked to push the boundaries of her time. Her passion for what she loved inspired me to recreate the one piece swimsuit to make a statement. A suit that is not only modern and unique, but still feminine and sexy. I wanted to show some skin to show how Annette was not afraid to bare some flesh. I used feathers to symbolise Kellerman flying to new heights for her era, and for the world of womens fashion. I have incorporated feathers and sequins to include current trends.
I have enjoyed this assignment so much. When i turned up to the first class of the year sick with a virus i was doubtful if i could finish it. Although it was an extremely crazy two weeks and stress levels were high, i really enjoyed the adrenalin of the whole process. This assignment has showed me that it is possible to do a large amount of work in a short amount of time if i put my mind to it!
A friend kindly agreed to model my swimsuit so i could take some photos.
Here are some from the shoot....enjoy!

Because Annette Kellerman was such an independent woman, who took fashion and womens independence to new heights, she reminded me of a bird. She felt free to fly in her life, achieving amazing, never before seen achievements. She was invincible. This is why im thinking about doing something with feathers...

Annette was described as fiesty, and contraversial in how she lived her life. I want to create a swimsuit that is unique. A design that, like Annette, will break the boundaries of a standard swimsuit.
These are the three additional images i was given to use as inspiration..
Two old photos of 1950s style swimwear and a photo of a face covered in a sculpture like mask.
From these images i would like to use the straight bottom silhouette of the first photo, but still show some skin (like in the second picture)....maybe a cut out. I also want to take the quirky theme of the third picture. This will bring a unique/eccentric feel to my design...
Annette Kellerman achieved success across a number of related fields – in fashion, film, sport, and as a role-model for women, encouraging self-motivation and self-development. Kellerman achieved global fame and recognition for influencing the design direction of the swimsuit in the 20th century.
With Annette Kellerman as my muse, I then chose, at random, three additional images to be used as inspiration. I have included these images. In this design process, I want to reinvent the one-piece swimsuit into a modern and unique statement piece, while still keeping it feminine.
i have done some research and found some images that appeal to me
and that i will use as additional
